Talks at The Smith: Imperial Monarchy: James V’s Voyage To The Isles

Unfortunately, our planned talk about the Stirling Heads has had to be cancelled. However, a talk will go ahead in the same timeslot, on an allied theme, still looking at the life and times of James V:

Often regarded as a circumnavigation of his realm in an assertion of his imperium, this talk will examine the motives that lay behind James V’s expedition to the northern and western Isles in 1540. Exploring both causes and consequences of the voyage, while it may well have been a display of imperial monarchy, there were very pressing domestic and foreign policy matters at play that James needed to resolve.

About Prof Alison Cathcart (she / her)

Ali Cathcart is Professor of Early Modern Scottish and Archipelagic History at the University of Stirling. Her recent monograph examined policies and processes of plantation across the North Channel, with a focus on James VI. She is currently researching insular communities within the archipelago, with a particular focus on the relationship between ‘centre’ and ‘periphery’, exploring customary legal practices on both land and sea.

All lectures take place at the Smith, at Albert Place, Stirling, on Wednesdays at 7.30pm (doors open 7pm)
£5 Adults
£3 for students, on production of a valid student ID card

Special Event – James V: Katherine

Our talk links well with touring performances of James V: Katherine by Rona Munro at the Macrobert Arts Centre, University of Stirling, on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 May, at 2.30pm and 7.30pm each day.
