Do you have any information on whether this is the same John Cairney whose studio was at 82 Gordon Street, Glasgow in the late 19th century? I am doing some research on a painting by John Cairney and was wondering if it was the same person.

John Cairney (1813-1862) took over the glazing and glass staining business of his father, William (1780-1852), a pioneer in the profession in Glasgow. John had a son, also John (1852-1906) who became a (probably part-time) landscape artist. Glasgow Post Office Directories between 1881 and 1889 have a studio for him at 108 West Regent Street, while he lived with his sisters at 47 Scott Street, Garnethill (Slater’s 1886 Directory has him as ‘John, artist, 114 West Campbell Street’. For paintings, therefore, it’s the son you’re looking for; if it is a painting on glass, it’s probably John Senior (but depending on the date of the window, the work might have been done by John Senior’s uncle (who probably died around 1836). The designer Daniel Cottier also spent with John Cairney’s company up to 1860 or so.

Good heavens! I’ve only just seen this response, some 18 months later! Useful information, thank you…and at least there is a link as I suspected between the two Johns, although it doesn’t appear that John jnr had any input into the firm’s designs or output. More research needed lol
