Friends of the Smith Lecture – Pompeii and Herculaneum by Jim Walker

The Roman towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum need no introduction to visitors holidaying on the Bay of Naples. The two towns and several villages including numerous private villas in the area were buried for centuries under ash, pumice and mud following the catastrophic volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD.  Jim Walker’s talk will look at the excavations that have uncovered the buried remains of Pompeii and Herculaneum, showing Roman life as it was frozen in time in the 1st century AD.

Tickets at the door:  £5 (£4 for Friends) includes tea/coffee and biscuits
